Before you check the table¶
A few quick questions often help before you even start looking for a cause:
- How long has the plant looked like this? A single old, lower leaf turning yellow is usually just normal leaf aging — not a disease.
- Has anything changed recently? A new location, new pot, new substrate, a change in watering habits, or a new fertilizer are common triggers.
- How does the substrate feel? Stick a finger 2–3 cm (about an inch) into it. Many symptoms are directly related to too much or too little water.
If you're unsure whether it's a pest: take a photo and use pest detection — that's usually the fastest way to get a well-founded assessment.
Leaves: Discoloration and Spots¶

Don't accidentally treat a beneficial insect as a pest
Not every crawling thing on your plant is a pest. Predatory beneficials such as ladybug larvae, lacewings, or predatory mites can look unusual but are helpful. Pest detection explicitly flags beneficials as such instead of reporting them as pests.

If You Can't Find the Symptom or Aren't Sure¶
- Take a sharp, well-lit photo of the affected area and use pest detection — it recognizes both visible pests and typical damage patterns, even when no insect is visible.
- If there's a confirmed infestation, log an inspection in the pest management (IPM) system to track it over time.
- Check whether anything has changed recently in your watering habits, location, or fertilization — your care reminders and watering log can help you trace that back.
Planned Extension: Photo Diagnosis for Diseases and Deficiencies¶
Not yet implemented
A complementary automatic photo diagnosis specifically for diseases and nutrient deficiencies (distinct from the already-available pest detection, which specializes in pests and damage patterns) is planned but not yet available in the interface (internal reference: REQ-038). It will produce a suspected-cause list from a leaf photo with the categories "disease", "nutrient deficiency", and "pest", compute additional image metrics (e.g. leaf area, discolored area ratio) and — like pest detection — always show only an unconfirmed hypothesis that you confirm yourself. A treatment is never triggered automatically.
Frequently Asked Questions¶
I don't see an insect, but the leaves look infested — what now?
Many pests, such as spider mites or thrips, are nearly impossible to spot with the naked eye. Use pest detection: it also recognizes pure damage patterns (webbing, speckling, sucking damage) without the causing insect needing to be visible in the photo.
Is a single yellow leaf already a cause for concern?
Usually not. Plants naturally shed their oldest, lowest leaves over time — that's normal leaf aging. Keep observing the plant; a closer check is worthwhile only once several leaves at once, or young leaves, are affected.
How do I know whether it's related to watering or fertilization?
A look at your watering log shows you when and how much was last watered, and whether EC or pH values were recorded. If a value deviates noticeably from the target ranges in fertilization, that's a strong indicator.
Can Kamerplanter automatically detect that my plant isn't doing well?
Kamerplanter automatically evaluates photos you specifically submit via pest detection. A complementary automatic diagnosis specifically for diseases and nutrient deficiencies is planned but not yet available in the interface (see above). For everything else, this page is meant as a reference guide.
